Phaience Workshop Dorset County Museum Sat 7th January 2012
07-01-2012
The Ancient Wessex Network is straying into slightly foreign territory with this workshop at the Dorset County Museum on Saturday 7th January 2012.
The workshop starts at 2.30pm, but the network members will be setting up all morning, so people are welcome to come and see what is happening.
Members are experimenting with some different methods of producing faience objects, using various technologies and recipes. Details are given on the page at this link.
The afternoon will include short talks by Kate Verkooijen who studied and recreated the technology of British bronze Age faience during her MA in Experimental Archaeology and Will Brown who has been making faience objects for many years.
There will be opportunities for those attending to make their own items using the Egpytian Paste, replicating some of the items on display in the current exhibition.
There will be two kilns out in the rear courtyard, where batches of faience will be fired to 1000C. One is a modern gas fired "Raku" kiln, fired by Bill Crumbleholme, the other is a furnace based on those used by Mark Vyvyan-Penney to melt bronze using a bronze age level of technology.
Tickets are available at the museum shop for £5 , see the museum website at this link.
