    About Di Pattinson

I began water colour painting as a hobby in the 1980's but having three young children at home time for painting was limited. During the 2000's I attended some Adult education art classes and this encouraged me to take a part time two year Fine Art and Design Diploma at Weymouth College. It was very inspiring as it gave me the opportunity to try many different disciplines. Alongside this I was learning to make felt and began working creatively with textiles. I became 'hooked' and now work mainly with felt. I run creative felt making workshops in village halls and at home.

I draw inspiration for my art work from the colours and textures of the natural world, interpretating what I see by transforming fleece into felt. Felting is an ancient technique which is still used today. It always fascinates me how such seemingly delicate fibres can be manipulated to create a tough, durable fabric. I enjoy taking a painterly approach when creating my 2D pieces. It is possible to do this by working with fleece as if it is paint. Before starting a piece I prepare my 'palette' by selecting the colours I choose to work with and then lay down the 'ground'. This is worked on, blending the colours to create a multiplicity of shades and tones. I also use a needle felting technique to add finer detail. The complex textures and layers give interest and intrigue.

My 3D pieces are more functional and again the design ideas come from natural forms.
