Lea Phillips
I studied pottery at Harrow School of Art and completed the Harrow Studio Pottery course in 1982. In the eighties I worked for Mary Wonderausch at her slip ware pottery in Compton, Surrey. I worked for many years in Guildford making slip and under glaze decorated earthenware before taking a break in the nineties to complete the apprenticeship at Dartington pottery in Devon. In 2000 I set up the workshop at Coombe Park near Totnes in Devon making decorated stoneware ceramics.
In November 2021 I relocated the workshop to Weymouth and opened the Happy Crab Gallery in the Spring of 2022 at 20A Gloucester St. Weymouth, The gallery is two minutes walk from the sea and being born in July I am a very Happy Crab!. This is both my studio and retail outlet and shows the full range of my ceramics in five different designs.
All my ceramics are wheel thrown using high fired stoneware clay and are decorated with free and abstract designs, using vibrant colourful glazes made to my own recipes.
In addition to the ceramics I also make wall hanging art using combinations of drawing, collage and printing, as well as prints and greetings cards based on digitally enhanced close-up photographs of glaze surfaces.
