"I am a painter. I live in Ringstead, a wild valley by the sea on the Jurassic Coast. This is my studio..." Merete trained at Central St. Martin's, London followed by a Scholarship to Italy.
“ I work much outside, direct from land and sea. The hills and rugged cliffs, the huge horizons with their fleeting light and radiant colour impel and inspire both my figurative and abstract work. There is constant change: I may believe I have a painting and suddenly a whole new radiance, shift in mood opens up. There is exhilaration or total chaos. I experiment with photography, digital media, but above all paint on paper and canvas - from 6 sq. ins. to 6 sq. ft., to get the image I want. My paintings may evolve as figurative or abstract but the root impulse is emotional, expressive and essentially joyful. I want to bring an awareness of the elements to our increasingly hermetic life.” After early experience making documentaries for television and as Arts Correspondent for the Guardian, I returned to painting full-time. I have exhibited widely in the UK and abroad, including the at Royal Academy and with the London Group. My paintings are in national and international collections. |
